Cornershop se forme à Leicester en 1992 autour des ex General Havoc, les frères Tjinder et Avtar Singh, et David Chambers, et le guitariste/claviériste Ben Ayres. Dès le premier single « In the Days of Ford Cortina », le groupe allie la musique indienne au rock et à l'electro. En 1994, Hold On It Hurts s'essaie timidement à cette formule.

Indo rock

Recentré autour de Tjinder Singh et Ben Ayres, Cornershop publie Woman's Gotta Have It en 1995. C'est en 1997 que son mélange indo-rock explose avec le très réussi When I Was Born for the 7th Time, co-produit par Dan the Automator, dont est extrait le hit « Brimful of Asha » (n°16 anglais). Son remix par Fatboy Slim arrive en tête des charts.

Leçons de Rocky

Cornershop change d'orientation et devient Clinton pour l'album Disco and the Halfway to Discontent en 1999, puis reprend son nom pour le peu inspiré Handcream for a Generation (2002), malgré le hit « Lessons Learned from Rocky I to Rocky III ».

Un long silence s'ensuit, troublé en 2006 par le single « Wop the Groove » et un nouvel album trois ans plus tard. L'excellent Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast (été 2009) est salué par quatre clés dans Télérama.
