Bireli Lagrene was born on the September 4, 1966 in Soufflenheim, (Lower-Rhin) in a traditional gypsy family and community. He started playing the guitar at the age of four. When, at the age of eight, he recovered Django Reinhardt?s repertoire, his relatives were already calling him a child prodigy. Winning a gypsy music festival (in Strasbourg) at the age of twelve gave him the opportunity to tour in Germany and later on, to record his live performance on the double LP Route to Django. Being offered a chance to leave for the United States, he met the greatest jazz musicians of the international scene such as St?phane Grappelli, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter... In 1984, he met Larry Coryell in New-York. Later on, he was introduced to bassist Jaco Pastorius and ventured with him in the fusion jazz style. Together, they toured Europe, which contributed a great deal to Bireli?s musical emancipation. Returning to a more traditional style, Bireli recorded Gypsy Project and Gipsy Project and Friends in 2001.

Il commenca la guitare des l'age de quatre ans. A huit ans, il reprend le repertoire de Django Reinhardt et son entourage voit apparaitre un futur petit genie de la guitare : sa technique de jeu est extraordinaire ainsi que son sens de la musique. A l'age de douze ans il remporte un festival de musique tzigane a Strasbourg. A treize, il est engage pour faire une tournee en Allemagne, et suite a celle-ci, en 1980, il enregistre en concert le double album Route to Django.
Il a l'opportunite de partir aux Etats-Unis ou, pendant plusieurs annees, il joue avec des musiciens tels que Stephane Grappelli, Benny Goodman, Benny Carter... En 1984 a New York, il rencontre Larry Coryell, guitariste deja internationalement connu, que l'on retrouve dans la video ? The Super Guitar Trio ? (Al Di Meola, Larry Coryell, Bireli Lagrene).
Il rencontre plus tard le bassiste Jaco Pastorius et se tourne vers le jazz fusion, avec lequel il entame une tournee en Europe (1984-1987), qui livre des albums tels que Stuttgart Aria. Apres etre passe par un style proche du rock, il revient en 1990 a un style acoustique. Sur Acoustics moments (1990), il joue de la guitare et de la basse electrique. Il sort egalement un somptueux album Jazz in Marciac (1994). Il entame ensuite des collaborations avec Didier Lockwood puis le trio de Richard Galliano. Enfin, apres avoir un court moment forme un quartet, il enregistre deux albums (2001) : Gipsy Project et Gipsy Project and Friends, dans ce dernier il joue avec le talentueux Stochelo Rosenberg et le violoniste Florin Niculescu, sur un ton de jazz gitan.
Sa carriere est exceptionnelle et son talent certain, le seul bemol est qu'il n'a que tres peu compose. Et comme l'affirme Babik Reinhardt, fils du ? genial manouche ?, il est certainement le digne representant de Django.
Outre Django Reinhardt, Bireli Lagrene affirme etre particulierement influence par Wes Montgomery.
